15-month-old boy dies of flu after hospital refuses to admit him twice


A 15-month-old boy died in Ptolemais, western Macedonia, after being rushed to a local hospital hours later with a very high fever. In previous days, parents had already twice They brought the child to the hospital, where he was tested for the influenza A strain.

The doctors gave the child antifever drugs and sent home, stating that “his poor health will put him at greater risk of hospital-acquired infections”, Skai TV reports, citing a hospital representative. According to Mega TV, the parents brought the boy to the hospital with a temperature of 40 degrees on New Year’s morning. Doctors diagnosed a severe respiratory infection and sent him home. At home, the boy’s health deteriorated, and the next morning his parents took him to the hospital again.

The family told the media that on January 2, the child was readmitted to the hospital because the temperature did not subside. There he was again given anti-fever medication. Doctors advised the parents to go home, but there the child’s condition worsened and he was transferred to another hospital, Bodosakio, where he died 4 hours later.

Bodosakio Hospital said in a statement that the child was immunocompromised due to chronic health problems and his transfer to the hospital’s intensive care unit in Thessaloniki was not possible.

An autopsy of the child was performed on Wednesday, the results of toxicological and histological tests are expected in the coming days. The hospital management ordered an urgent administrative investigation into the causes that led to the baby’s death.

The baby was buried Thursday in Albania, the country of origin of the parents, who reportedly intend to seek legal action against the hospital.
