The “minimum wage” in France has increased since the new year to 1398.69 euros, what can you buy with this money

From January 1, 2024, the minimum monthly salary in France will be 1398.69 euros net or 1766.92 euros gross, that is, an increase of 1.13%.

BB.LV publication tried definewhether this is a lot or a little, and at the same time tells what other changes await the French in the new year.

Considering the rise in prices for literally everything, this amount is enough for a “life without excesses”, or, in other words, for survival. In order to support vulnerable citizens, the size of system-wide pensions will also increase slightly, by 5.3%, “to cope with changes in consumer prices.”

The cost of living in France is quite high, and prices continue to rise. For example, all postage will become more expensive starting in January. A standard letter stamp weighing up to 20 grams will rise in price by 11.20%, from 1.16 to 1.29 euros. And this is a significant change for the French, who, in the old fashioned way, conduct document flow in paper form.

Cigarette prices are set to rise again, with most 20-packs increasing by 50 cents and some going up even more. Now the price of a pack of Marlboro will reach 12 euros, Lucky Strike and Winston 11 euros, Vogue – 11.5 euros.

Starting from the new year, young people will be able to take a driving test and get behind the wheel from the age of 17. Most of the French population lives outside the city, so this measure is designed to increase the mobility of the younger generation. In addition, public transport is developed only in large cities. Innovation for drivers: exceeding the speed limit by less than 5 km/h will now only be punishable by a fine and will no longer lead to the loss of one point on the driver’s license (adult drivers have twelve points in total). And also:

• Manufacturers will be forced to recycle non-food waste and will no longer be able to throw it away.
• If you break the screen of your phone or tablet, the state will give you 25 euros for repairs, and even up to 50 euros for a computer.
• Reusable pads will be free for girls under 25 years of age.

But the “ungrateful” French do not appreciate the government’s efforts. They note that it does not advertise other changes too much: electricity will rise in price by 10%, land tax by 4%, health insurance by 8%, banking services by 4%, gasoline and postage stamps by 4%.
