The State Border Service of Ukraine reported how many draft dodgers tried to escape conscription abroad in 2023

Speaker of the State Border Service of Ukraine Andrey Demchenko noted that there are fewer people wanting to cross the border outside the checkpoints this year.

Eleven thousand Ukrainian men tried to cross the border outside checkpoints and were detained. Another three thousand provided fake documents to border guards. Most often, the State Tax Service reports, evaders try to illegally cross the border with Romania and Moldova, and less often with Poland. Andrey Demchenko noted, quotes edition “Correspondent”:

“In total, over the eleven months of this year, 7 thousand 700 violators were detained who tried to illegally cross the border on the green section of the border, that is, outside the checkpoints.”

However, there are now significantly fewer such incidents than last year, he says:

“Back then, we detained 80-100 violators per day. Now there are much fewer attempts.”

In autumn and winter, due to weather conditions, says the speaker of the State Tax Service, people try to cross the border outside checkpoints less often:

“If we talk about previous periods, an increase in attempts was recorded when there are favorable weather conditions for crossing. Because when it gets cold and snowy, the terrain becomes impassable, then there are fewer people willing to cross the border.”

Demchenko noted that the number of men trying to cross the border through checkpoints with fake documents has increased. Since January of this year, border guards have exposed about three thousand such attempts. Most often these were forgeries of documents indicating unsuitability for military service, disability, and certificates of a father with many children.
