Trump banned from running for US presidency

The Supreme Court of the US state of Colorado banned Trump from participating in the presidential election and decided to exclude the ex-president from the list of candidates for the 2024 US presidency.

How reports CNN, the reason for this decision was Trump’s role in the events of January 6, 2021, when his supporters entered the Capitol in an attempt to appeal the results of the presidential election, according to which Joe Biden won. The Colorado court’s ruling makes Trump the first presidential candidate in U.S. history to be ruled ineligible to lead the White House. It comes under a rarely used constitutional provision that bars officials who have participated in “insurrection or insurrection” from holding public office.

The decision was made with a slight majority of votes (4:3). The court concluded that the Constitution bars a contender for the 2024 Republican nomination from appearing on the ballot because of his role “in inciting violence against the government of the United States.”

The ruling only affects Colorado’s March 5 Republican primary, but the decision will likely affect Trump’s standing in the November 5 general election.

The Trump campaign called the court’s decision flawed and undemocratic, and promised it would be appealed to the US Supreme Court. It is worth recalling that several previous attempts to remove Trump from the ballot in other states were unsuccessful.
