Reaction to video of half-naked prisoners: “They are civilians and journalists, not Hamas militants”

A video shown by Israeli television showing dozens of Palestinian prisoners in their underwear and blindfolded caused a furore.

Among those arrested was correspondent for the Arabic-language service Al-Araby Al-Jadeed of The New Arab network Diya al-Kahlutwho was identified in the photographs by his colleagues and relatives.

Israeli media report the arrests of suspected Hamas and Islamic Jihad members in the Gaza Strip.

Mossad commented on the photo with the following words: “More than 100 terrorists crawled out of the tunnels.”

A London news site reports on X that “The Israeli occupation army has arrested dozens of Gazans, including a correspondent for The New Arab newspaper” in the Palestinian enclave. A report by the English-language publication The New Arab emphasizes that the journalist was one of dozens of people “arrested by the Israeli army in Gaza and forced to take off their clothes.” According to eyewitnesses, they were subjected to personal searches and “humiliated and then taken to an unknown place.”

Rami Abdou, president of the Euro-Mediterranean Observatory for Human Rights, a non-governmental organization based in Geneva, Switzerland, said in a post on the X website that he identified the journalist, as well as the school director and UN official.

Videos and photographs aired on Israeli television this afternoon and have since gone viral on social media show the men squatting with their heads bowed, wearing only their underpants. Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman Daniel Hagari, responding to a question, said this evening that in the area “terrorists enter and exit tunnels and houses.” “We are investigating and checking who is associated with Hamas and who is not,” he said, adding that Israeli soldiers are eradicating “terrorists who are still hiding in the tunnels like cowards.”

According to experts from the French News Agency (AFP), who analyzed the images, the video was filmed in the Beit Lahiya area in the northern part of the Gaza Strip. The Israeli newspaper Maariv previously reported that the captives were Hamas militants captured by Israeli soldiers in Gaza City.
