“If the European Union is recognizedeSince the killing of journalists is evil, is it possible to turn a blind eye to the cries of suffering over the mass murder of journalists coming to us from Gaza? The murder of journalists is the murder of truth, because journalists are the voice of truth.”
With these words, Kostas Arvanitis, MEP from SYRIZA PS and member of the LIBE Committee, concluded his speech at an event organized by the Left Group in the European Parliament last Wednesday and dedicated to the situation in the Palestinian territories.
At the event, moderated by Spanish left-wing MEP Manu Pineda, the chairman of the Union of Palestinian Journalists, Nasser Abu Baker, told those present about the dangerous escalation in the number of deaths of journalists:
“According to the SPC, at least 63 journalists and media workers have been killed since the outbreak of hostilities, with many more wounded and missing. And this number is growing sharply every moment, and just a few hours ago it became known about the murder of Palestinian poet Refaat Alarir. Journalists are civilians, peaceful people who are actually serving a great cause, in war zones. The murder of journalists is the murder of truth, because journalists are the voice of truth. The massacre of innocent people in Gaza is an atrocity that goes beyond any conventional framework of warfare and must be condemned by European leaders.” – said Kostas Arvanitis, concluding that “We will take immediate initiatives to draw attention to this aspect of the terrible war.”
“Truth is being killed in Gaza. The words of Refaat Alarir, which we will never forget: “If I am to die, let hope be a fairy tale,” is an outstanding expression and at the same time the cornerstone of the rule of law.”

As it became known on December 8, among the “men of military age” captured by the Israeli military in the GAZA strip, correspondent for the Arabic-language service Al-Araby Al-Jadeed of The New Arab network Diya al-Kahlutwho was identified in the photographs by his colleagues and relatives.
Israeli media, for their part, report the arrests of suspected members of Hamas and Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip.
