They even steal oil from the churchyard

As the price of vegetable oil has risen, the number of crimes associated with it has also increased. In Thessaloniki, there are cases of oil theft from cemeteries every day!

According to the channel OPENthe situation has reached a dead end: people prefer to take the oil with them when visiting the graves of their loved ones, rather than leaving a bottle behind the monument, as has always been done before.

According to Georgios Avarlis, a member of the Thessaloniki City Council, bottles of oil, candles, flowers, wreaths, etc. have been stolen every day from city cemeteries lately. In fact, some have now started buying paraffin oil because olive oil is now much more expensive. However, cemetery thieves steal it too!

Mr. Avarlis emphasizes that bottles left near graves are taken and then sold. The official emphasizes that no one has been identified or arrested.
