Investigation: an 8-month-old girl taken from Kherson was adopted into the Russian Federation, changing her name and place of birth (video)

The eight-month-old baby, taken from Kherson, Ukraine, has an older sister and legal guardian who are now in Greece. It is unlikely that they will ever meet – the girl was adopted in Russia, having changed all the data in the documents.

And the parents of the baby were well-known personalities in Russia, as shown investigation The Insider – leader of the A Just Russia party Sergei Mironov and his wife Inna Varlamova.

The Ukrainian TV channel TSN released an investigation (watch the video) about the fate of a girl from occupied Kherson, Margarita Prokopenko. During the occupation of the city, she was in an orphanage. Mironov and Varlamova registered themselves as the girl’s parents, completely changed her first and last name in the documents and indicated the Russian city of Podolsk as her place of birth.

TSN obtained hacked correspondence from Varlamova, from which it follows that the politician’s wife gave the girl a test to determine her blood type and was glad that it matched her husband’s blood type. Varlamova and Mironov, the publication notes, allegedly discussed the adoption of children from Ukraine with their older children and told them to keep it secret.

Yes, “children” is not a misspelling. There really were two of them – two-year-old Ilya Vashchenko and ten-month-old Margarita Prokopenko. However, a medical examination showed that the boy had health problems, and the couple decided not to take him into the family. writes edition “Important Stories”.

It is unknown where Ilya is now. The investigation established that only a year after leaving Kherson, in September 2023, he received a new birth certificate. It follows from it that Ilya is in the Moscow region.

According to TSN, in Ukraine Margarita Prokopenko, who is now called Marina Mironova according to new documents, has a legal guardian Darina Repina and an older sister Anna – they are now in Greece for security reasons. Victoria Novikova, an analyst for the project investigating war crimes in Ukraine, The Reckoning Project, told “Important Stories” that Margarita also has a brother who is in an orphanage in the Simferopol children’s home “Yolochka”.

At the end of August 2022, Mironov’s wife Inna Varlamova arrived in the Kherson region along with Mironov’s first deputy in the State Duma, Yana Lantratova. Local authorities gave them a power of attorney to remove two children – 10-month-old Margarita Prokopenko and two-year-old Ilya Vashchenko, Hromadske wrote in detail. told in November 2023, BBC publication. Moreover, Margarita was discharged, despite the fact that she was being treated for bronchitis at the Kherson Regional Children's Hospital. A healthcare worker says:

“When I asked why I should discharge sick children, Zavalskaya said that that woman had chosen them and would take them to Moscow, everything was ready and there were tickets.”

The doctors managed to postpone the girl's discharge only for a week. Officially, both children were taken to Moscow for “examination, determination of further treatment tactics and rehabilitation.”

To adopt a child in the Russian Federation, you need to apply to the court. Such cases are considered in a special order. In November 2022, such a case was heard in the Podolsk City Court of the Moscow Region. The interested party was Inna Varlamova, and the applicant was the Moscow Region Ministry of Social Development Department No. 16, which requested information about Margarita and Ilya from the Kherson orphanage.

Journalists have documents at their disposal that testify: a month after the court decision, in December 2022, Sergei Mironov and Inna Varlamova adopted Margarita Prokopenko, who was taken from Kherson. A source familiar with the situation told the publication that Margarita’s biological mother was deprived of parental rights and her father died, but the girl has other relatives.

According to The Insider, Mironov called this information “fake”, having written in your Telegram channel:

“I see no point in reacting to yet another fake hysteria unleashed by the Ukrainian special services and their Western curators. During my political activity, I have already become accustomed to such phenomena as information attacks, spreading false information about me, my children, family, and close relatives. Behind all this there is one goal – gross personal discredit of everyone who takes an irreconcilable patriotic position today. Everyone, starting with the President of Russia and those nearby. I can say one thing: you are trying in vain. Lying may have temporary success. But in the end, the truth will still win. And Russia will bring the Northern Military District to complete victory, and the goals set by the president will be fulfilled.”

The actions of the 70-year-old deputy and his 55-year-old wife may be classified by the International Criminal Court (ICC) as a war crime. The Geneva Convention prohibits the forced removal of civilians from the territory of an occupied state. The Convention on the Prevention of the Crime of Genocide includes in its definition of genocide “the forcible transfer of children from one human group to another.”
