Georgia: Opposition leaders were brutally beaten by security forces (video)

At a protest against the law on “foreign agents” in the capital of Georgia, security forces beat the chairman of the largest opposition party in Georgia, the United National Movement, Levan Khabeishvili, and the leader of the political association “Citizens,” Aleko Elisashvili.

About it tells “Echo of the Caucasus”, and the Formula television company published a photo of Khabeishvili with signs of beatings on his face – he had injuries in the maxillofacial area. The party called on the Ministry of Internal Affairs to ensure the physical safety of the oppositionist and immediately release him, writes SOVA. The UNM statement said:

“A few minutes ago, on the personal order of Bidzina Ivanishvili, representatives of the Russian regime in Georgia kidnapped the chairman of the United National Movement, member of parliament Levan Khabeishvili. At the time of his arrest, he was helping a citizen who was injured during the protest.”

The oppositionist himself distributed a video message from the clinic, in which he optimistically stated that “nothing hurts”:

“The eye will pass, the body and everything will pass, the fight against the Putinists must continue.”

The leader of the political association “Citizens” Aleko Elisashvili also suffered from the actions of the security forces – he was thrown to the ground after he approached the police:

“They dragged me too, but when I saw Levan’s photo… It doesn’t matter what party I represent, you can’t treat a deputy like that, you can’t treat him like a dog.”

Earlier, the media noted, security forces tried to attack the leader of the Agmashenebeli Strategy party, Georgy Vashadze.

On the night of Wednesday, May 1, Georgian special forces tried to violently disperse participants in a peaceful protest against the law on “foreign agents” in Tbilisi, and then retreated. The night before, Georgian law enforcement officers pepper-sprayed a dozen demonstrators. On Chitadze Street, clashes occurred between activists and police officers: Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs officers used force to clear the area at the side entrance to parliament, where politicians and activists were holding a sit-in.

The Legal Committee of the Georgian Parliament supported the bill in the second reading on April 29. Its discussion at the plenary session of the Georgian parliament may continue for several more days. EU once again warned Georgia that the adoption of the law on “foreign agents” will have consequences for the process of its integration into the European Union.
