Horse escaped from stall at 30,000 feet (9,144 meters)

An emergency occurred on a Boeing 747 cargo plane – a horse broke free and forced the pilot to make an emergency landing.

The plane took off for Belgium from New York last Thursday, but an hour and a half after takeoff, at an altitude of more than 9 km, a horse being transported by air was freed from its stall. The pilot of Air Atlanta Islandic Flight 4592 told the controller, quotes Air Force:

“We have a live horse on board the plane. She managed to escape. We can’t bring the horse back and put him in a stall.”

The Boeing had to turn around and make an emergency landing at John F. Kennedy International Airport. Due to the heavy weight, the plane had to drain fuel. The pilot requested the presence of a veterinarian at the airport.

It is unclear how the horse managed to free itself, however, even after landing, it was still not secured in its place. According to FlightRadar24, the plane took off on its route later that day and successfully arrived at Liege airport on Friday morning.

Air Atlanta Islandic did not immediately respond to the BBC’s request for comment or say why the animal was on the plane. According to experts, one of the most likely is the transportation of racehorses.

“There is first class, business class and economy,” the source told CNN, referring to the different size container options available for pets. By the way, such a case in flight is far from the only one. Previously, our publication told how in August of this year the bear freed himself from the cage on an Iraqi Airways flight from Dubai to Baghdad.
