Let us recall that Putin served for 16 years as a foreign intelligence officer for the KGB, including 6 years in Dresden (Germany). The Russian president also touched on the topic of the LGBT community, speaking in its defense:
“I’ll say something unexpected: they too, these topics and these people, have the right to win, show, tell. Because this is also part of society, what people live by. It’s bad if they only win all sorts of competitions, that’s “This is of no use. But this desire for equality… this equality should be everywhere, in everything – including in competitions in the field of culture.”
He explained that, as he imagines, to win cultural competitions in the West it is necessary to “tell, write, show something from the life of sexual minorities, transgender people and some other transformers.”
Let us recall that in Russia there is now a law banning LGBT propaganda, which the courts recognize as any approving statements about the LGBT community. According to the practice of Russian courts, citizens can be fined up to 200 thousand rubles (as a private individual) or up to 400 thousand (as an official) for such words.
Vladimir Putin’s speech came on the day when the Russian Ministry of Justice appealed to the Supreme Court with a demand to recognize the “international public movement of LGBT people” as extremist.
