Impeachment for criticizing Israel

House of Representatives US votes for impeachment Rashida Tlaib, the only Palestinian-American in Congress, for her comments on the war between Israel and Hamas.

The House voted 234-188 Tuesday night to impeach the three-term Michigan Democratic congressman. About 22 members of her party joined Republicans in supporting the resolution, which alleged that Tlaib was “promoting falsehoods about the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, and calling for the destruction of the State of Israel.” The punishment falls short of expulsion and follows a failed vote of no confidence last week.

While critical of Israel’s response and US support for it, Tlaib has also repeatedly condemned the Hamas attack. Ahead of the vote, she defended her position, saying she “will not be silenced” and will not allow her words to be distorted. Flanked by some progressive Democratic colleagues, she stressed that her criticism had always been directed at the Israeli government and its leadership led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“It’s important to separate people and government,” she said. “The idea that criticism of the Israeli government is anti-Semitism sets a very dangerous precedent.” And it has been used to silence various voices advocating for human rights across our country.”

Tlaib previously noted that her election to the US Congress was a “glimmer of hope” for the Palestinians, which could “reveal to the world the full extent and severity of their humanitarian situation.” Rashid Tlaib and Ilhan Omar became the first Muslim women elected to the US Congress, along with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Tlaib became one of two Democratic Socialists of America activists in its composition.
