Maine killer found dead


After a 48-hour search for the perpetrator of the Lewiston, Maine massacre, the body of the perpetrator has been discovered.

The first indications are of suicide: the body was found near the waste recycling center where he worked until he recently quit. Maine Gov. Janet Mills confirmed at a press conference Friday that the shooting suspect had been found dead:

Officers raided his Bowdoin home Thursday night but left hours later. Loud bangs were heard at the scene and police shouted at him to surrender. FBI agents and local law enforcement could be heard over a bullhorn telling the suspect to leave the house “with your hands up.” But a few hours later the police left the scene. It’s unclear what prompted the search, and a Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman said officers were “simply exercising due diligence in following up on every lead in an attempt to locate and apprehend Card.”

Shooting started at a bowling alley in the small town of Lewiston shortly before 7 p.m. local time. One woman and six men were killed there. About 10 minutes later, a shooting was reported at the nearby Schemengees Bar & Grille, where eight other people were fatally shot. Sixteen of the wounded were initially transferred to local hospitals, three of whom later died.

The attack prompted calls for stronger gun control measures in the US, with Congressman Jared Golden calling for a ban on assault weapons, reversing his previous position.
