Ikaria is one of fifty destinations around the world recommended by the world-renowned travel guide Lonely Planet in its just-released Best in Travel 2024 edition.
The eastern Aegean island ranks 7th in the Best Value Destinations category, with editors describing it as “Greek’s most unusual and charismatic island”. As they say, “its distinctive landscape includes dramatic forested gorges, rocky lunar landscapes and secluded beaches with turquoise waters.
Ikaria’s independent spirit, its unique culture (with its distinctive houses), nightlife and vibrant festivals arose from centuries of isolated life under the constant threat of pirates and foreign invaders.”
Included in the same category are the US Midwest, Poland, Nicaragua, Roman frontier forts on the Danube in Romania, the Otago region of New Zealand, Egypt, Algeria, Normandy and night trains in Europe.
As the publishers note, the annual special edition celebrates its 50th anniversary and features “a comprehensive and inspiring list of 50 incredible places to see in the next year – a diverse range of regions that are underrated or often overlooked.”
The list is compiled by a panel of experts consisting of regular contributors to the guide, as well as prominent members of the travel community, who select the top 10 destinations in separate categories: Countries, Regions, Cities and Best Value Destinations.
Each recommended destination comes with detailed descriptions of the options available and how to get there, as well as plenty of useful information to ensure you have the best possible travel experience.
