Swiss scientists discovered another organ in the human body and called it the exclusome.
It plays an important role in the functioning of the immune system, tells journal Molecular Biology of the Cell (MBoC), and is found in the cytoplasm of cells. The exclusome acts as a barrier to external pathogens, viruses and bacteria, preventing them from penetrating the cell nucleus and infecting humans.
Thanks to the authors of the important discovery, scientists from the Institute of Biochemistry, Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich, there is a possibility of rapid development of new research related to the treatment of autoimmune diseases *, since understanding the mechanisms of the exclusome can lead to the development of new strategies to combat such ailments.
True, the “new” organ is still far from new – it has existed in living organisms since the appearance of the simplest forms of life on Earth. This only emphasizes the enormous importance of the exclusome for the life of various organisms over a significant period of time. In addition, it indicates that the defense mechanisms provided by the exclusome were extremely important for the survival and development of organisms long before the emergence of complex multicellular organisms such as plants and animals.
*Autoimmune diseases are associated with dysfunction of the human immune system, which begins to perceive its own tissues as foreign and damage them. Such diseases are also called systemic, because, as a rule, the entire system or even the entire body is affected.
