Fraudster defrauded woman of 4,980 euros in 1 phone call


4,980 euros “flew away” from the bank account of a resident of Imathia, who became a victim of telephone scammers.

As it turned out during the investigation, in November 2022, employees of the Alexandria Security Department opened a case against a man who communicated with a resident of the city, posing as an employee of a public organization and, in just one call, managed to withdraw an amount of 4,980 euros from her bank account.

The fraudster and his accomplice pocketed another 8,769 euros as a result of the alleged sale of a car via the Internet. The Edessa security department has opened a criminal case against two men, one of whom is a foreigner.

As it turned out during the investigation, in April 2023, under the pretext of selling a car, they “stole” 8,769 euros from a resident of Edessa, which were transferred to their bank accounts.

Like us previously reported in Greece (as well as in other countries in Europe and North America) Telephone scammers have activated. Extortionists call Russian- and Ukrainian-speaking residents of the country under the pretext of “technical support for the bank,” police and other organizations. At first, the scammers did not get much results, since they did not know the Greek language and were poorly oriented in local realities.

To the editor “Athens News” received informationthat they are scammers have already involved local residents (we are talking about people who left the countries of the former USSR many years ago), who are aware of local realities and know the Greek language.

The skills of professional telephone scammers, together with knowledge of the Greek language and the realities of Greece, dramatically increase the chances of criminals.

To ensure your safety, the Greek Cybercrime Authority recommends:

  • Be careful with phone calls from unknown people and companies.
  • Do not call back a number that was provided via voicemail.
  • Do not discuss anything with those who call and ask for confidential information.
  • Do not share your online banking codes, card details or other sensitive information by email or telephone.
  • Under no circumstances should you share your credit or debit card PIN or bank account password through online banking.
  • Do not click on links that come to you on your mobile phone unless you are sure of their origin.
