Opened the elevator door and… fell into the shaft

A 49-year-old resident of Thessaloniki fell into an elevator shaft from a height of approximately 6 meters, resulting in injuries and hospitalization.

The incident occurred at 12 noon on the first floor of a residential building located in the center of the northern capital. According to reports, the man called the elevator and the door opened normally. However, he did not have time to realize that the cab had not arrived and stepped into the gaping void.

According to media reports, the man fell into the elevator shaft and survived with only injuries. The leg was hit the hardest. He is now in the city hospital and has received the necessary medical care. The specialists responsible for the elevators will be held accountable.

As you know, the normal operation of an elevator is that the shaft door is opened by a cabin that has arrived on the floor. When approaching, she first presses the lever, releasing the door lock, then the shaft doors engage with the cabin doors, and the cabin drive opens both doors together. Even if the shaft door stopper was broken, in the absence of a cabin, the shaft doors could not open on their own.

However, in Greek elevators, especially in older buildings, there is often only an outer door, so the risk of falling into the elevator shaft is much higher.
