Over 42,000 hectares burnt in Greece in 3 days

Information about the fires blazing in Greece for the past three days is simply shocking. According to meteo.gr, more than 42,000 hectares of land burned across the country.

As shown by a preliminary analysis of satellite data by the METEO division of the National Observatory of Athens (NAA):

  • 38,000 ha burnt in Evros
  • 2,300 hectares burnt in Veotia
  • 800 hectares burned on the island of Kythnos
  • 500 hectares burned down in Psakhna.

It should be noted that the above data is a preliminary estimate and will be revised as the boundaries of fires are clarified and higher resolution satellite data are obtained.

The report did not include fires in Fili and Aspropyrgos, as well as several other areas indicated in today’s reports.
