A master from Denmark has found an effective way to replace the material for making tombstones – instead of traditional granite, he uses clay.

How tells Euronews, Danish master mason Nikolai Thymm-Andersen has found a simple way to make environmentally friendly tombstones that do not emit harmful substances. Granite can be replaced with Danish clay, reducing shipping costs and carbon emissions.

This is doubly beneficial – because the granite blocks that are used for gravestones in Denmark are imported from China and India. Moreover, in addition to the carbon footprint of transportation, this stone itself is a heavy source of CO2.

The local resource – clay – can be fired. After special treatment, the material hardens like tiles. The resourceful artist's creations have already helped him win several European design awards and are used in Danish cemeteries.

However, Nikolai is not entirely satisfied – he has to make tombstones from Danish clay in molds in Germany, which leads to excessive CO2 consumption for transportation.
