OPG in Poland seized 9 million euros intended for refugees from Ukraine

The activities of an organized criminal group that committed a scam in relation to 39 million zlotys, intended to help refugees who fled the war in Ukraine, are being investigated by the Polish prosecutor’s office.

According to investigators, members of the organized criminal group fraudulently took possession of millions of funds, writes Wprost. Among the defendants is the currently arrested Agnieszka L., the founder of the popular Warsaw café Kulturalna. Together with four other persons, she was charged with the activities of an organized criminal group. The representative of the Szczecin Regional Prosecutor’s Office Anna Gavlovska-Rinkiewicz says:

“The investigation concerns fraud, the use of false documentation and money laundering.”

The investigation shows that the suspects managed to swindle 39 million zlotys (9 million euros) from the state treasury to help Ukrainian refugees, writes Gazeta Wyborcza. Three of the five suspects have been in custody since May 2023. The accusations brought by the prosecutor’s office relate to the functioning of the foundation, the head of which was Agnieszka L. Gawlowska-Rinkiewicz says:

“The grants concerned, for example, the food of refugees from Ukraine. They were not quite intended for what they were supposed to be used for, that is, to feed the refugees.”

The coffee house of the arrested Agnieszka L. has organized actions to help refugees who fled from Russian aggression, literally from the first day of the war. Prior to that, she repeatedly helped refugees from other countries. Now, despite the arrest of the founder of the institution, it works on the same schedule, Artur Shchenny, who is engaged in PR of the cafe, notes:

“The company still carries out catering and cultural activities, taking care of customer satisfaction. The company employs more than 40 employees, including refugees.”

As of today, the governments of European countries have already allocated more than 43 billion euros for Ukrainian refugees who left their homeland because of the war unleashed by Russia.
