How many Russians requested asylum in Turkey in 2023

According to Euronews, a total of 408,000 citizens requested asylum in Turkey in 2023.

According to the Turkstat statistical bureau, 25% of the total are persons with Russian citizenship. Recall that Türkiye is a temporary refuge for refugees. A person who has had to leave his state of nationality due to persecution may qualify for temporary protection status in Turkey. A person who:

• has objective fears for his life and security in connection with the armed conflict, humanitarian crisis;
• persecuted while staying in the territory of the country of citizenship;
• is located outside the state of his citizenship, in particular, in the territory of Turkey;
• is unable or unwilling to seek protection in any other country.

As officially reported, the application for protection is considered within 6 months from the date of registration. Upon satisfaction of the request, the applicant is issued an identity document with an individual identification number of a foreigner. The obtained certificate allows a person to stay in Turkey until its expiration date without issuing a residence permit.
