Near the building of the Masonic Lodge of Greece on the morning of July 13, an improvised device exploded. A few minutes before the explosion, unknown people called the police and warned about the bomb at the specified address.
Freemasonry in Greece since 1782. In 2016, in an attempt to keep up with the times of social media, the Grand Lodge of Greece (on the corner of Aharnon and Surmeli streets in the center of Athens) opened its doors for the first time, posting photos of the interior and its cloisters on its social media pages.
How informs eKathimerini, at 6:30 am, the police received an anonymous call about a bomb at Surmeli 2, but without specifying the time of the explosion. The police arrived and cordoned off the area.
5 minutes after the call, the explosive device went off without causing significant damage – a small fire broke out on the outside of the building, no one was injured. However indoors Bomb Disposal Unit discovered second devicewhich was destroyed in a controlled explosion.
The site of the explosion at the front of the building
An eyewitness told the news website newsit.gr that she saw a young man outside the building drop what appeared to be a backpack or plastic bag and yell “To hell with the Masons” three times.
His features were not hidden, she added. “As soon as I arrived at the corner of Alcibiados and Surmeli streets, there was an explosion. He was pretty strong. Then the same man ran to the corner of Surmeli and Acharnon, shouted “G@m@ your freemasonry” three times! and left. It was a young guy. The explosion happened exactly at 06:35. I had the phone in my hand and looked at the time as soon as it happened.”
This is one of four buildings officially owned by the Masonic Lodge in Greece. The Acharnon Masonic Lodge was founded in 1811 and is the first Grand Lodge in Greece. In addition to this building, three more Masonic palaces are officially listed in Greece – in Kifisia, Elefsina and Piraeus.
