The number of abandoned animals is horrifying: snakes, rabbits and iguanas are thrown into the street

In Thessaloniki, the number of animal abandonment cases is on the rise, the situation has worsened in the last three years.

“Over the past year, our team has collected ten rabbits, six snakes, four iguanas and some turtles”, – talks about the phenomenon of animal abandonment Stelios Geronimakis, co-founder of the public organization “Animal Rescue and Defense Squad” (ΜΚΟ “Animal Rescue and Defense Squad”).

On Saturday, the MKO received a call that a python had been found in the park of the Tumba district. “The animal, 40-50 cm long, has many cat scratches, is dehydrated and, as x-rays showed, its spine is broken,” says the activist.

In addition, according to the specialist, two weeks ago, a private person called the office. The caller said that he had two pythons and iguanawhich he received from his friend. “If you do not agree to pick them up, I will leave them on the street,” the man said.

“This is how things are. Of course, we told him that we would take the animals,” says Mr. Geronimakis, noting that “at least this gentleman behaved more honestly and did not immediately throw the animals out into the street, but called us.”
