Eurostat: 1 in 4 Greeks were on the poverty line in 2022


In 2022, more than 22% of the population of the European Union, or rather 95.3 million people, were at risk of poverty or social exclusion, according to Eurostat data released recently.

Nearly one in five Europeans lived in a household that faced at least one of the three risks of poverty and social exclusion: risk of poverty, severe material and social deprivation, and/or living in a household with a very low work intensity.

Greece zanal “dishonorable” place due to the presence the highest percentage of the population at risk of poverty or social exclusion. Our country with 26%, as well as Spain ranked third after Romania (34%) and Bulgaria (32%), two Balkan countries where almost every third citizen is on the verge of poverty.

The figure has remained relatively stable compared to 2021, when it was estimated at 95.4 million people (22% of the population), but this is a very high figure by the standards of the European Union.

The percentage of people at risk of poverty or social exclusion varied across countries EU in 2022. As noted above, the top performing countries were Romania, Bulgaria, followed by Greece and Spain in third place.

On the other side lowest interest were registered in the Czech Republic (12%), Slovenia (13%) and Poland (16%). A total of eight countries scored higher than the European average, and 19 countries lower.
