The unprecedented weather event for Greece in June occurred at noon on Saturday 3/06. In the center of Ioannina, the streets “turned white” as if it had snowed.
Hailstones the size of hazelnuts littered the roads and sidewalks. Residents, looking out the window, could not believe their eyes: “Is this summer, or what?”. The rainfall created problems in the urban infrastructure of Ioannina. The flooding of streets and houses happened instantly, just 15 minutes after the start of the thunderstorm.
The fire department began to receive numerous appeals from citizens who were taken by surprise by the bad weather. Problems were identified not only in the basements and on the first floors of houses or shops, but even in apartments on the 2nd and 3rd floors, where the balcony doors were open, reports APE-MPE.
Civil protection is at the service, taking appropriate actions in terms of the safety of the residents of the city. The work is carried out in cooperation with the fire department.
The hail damaged crops in the areas of Loggades, Kastritsa, Vasiliki and Drosochori.
