US Attorney General, Attorney General Merrick Garland announced the first permission issued to send confiscated Russian funds to Ukraine for its restoration:
“While this is the first time the United States has sent confiscated Russian funds to rebuild Ukraine, it won’t be the last.”
How informs Reuters agency on Wednesday, May 10, we are talking about the assets of the Russian oligarch Konstantin Malofeev, confiscated for violating sanctions. The publication clarifies that in April 2022, the US Department of Justice accused him of violating sanctions imposed against Russia for a military attack on Ukraine. According to the US authorities, the businessman financially supported the Russians, inciting separatist sentiments in Crimea. The US Attorney General said at the time:
“On an account in one of the American financial institutions, millions of assets related to Malofeev’s violation of sanctions were arrested.”
In February 2023, the US Attorney General issued permission to transfer this money for the needs of Ukraine, and on May 10, the US Department of Justice issued an order to make the “first transfer” of these funds, writes D.W. This document has not yet been published.
Konstantin Malofeev is the founder of the Tsargrad TV channel. It has been on the US sanctions list since 2014. In April last year, the penalties against him were expanded, TASS writes:
“In particular, Transcapitalbank and a global network of more than 40 individuals and organizations were blacklisted, allegedly controlled by a large businessman.”
In December 2022, the US Congress approved a legislative amendment proposed by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham that would allow the transfer of assets confiscated from Russian oligarchs due to sanctions to Ukraine. At the same time, the prosecutors stated in court that they had the right to confiscate the money in the account of Konstantin Malofeev at Sunflower Bank in Denver, since Malofeev tried, contrary to US sanctions, to transfer them to a business partner.
