Experts: Greece is waiting for the hottest summer this year

According to experts, this summer in Greece is expected to be one of the hottest in recent years.

ΟΑΣΠ President Efthymios Lekkas, speaking on the ERT channel, noted that the climate problem worries not only Greece, but also the wider Mediterranean, as well as the whole world. He stated: “We are seeing developments in Spain as well as other Mediterranean countries and we are concerned, of course, based on international reports and existing data. There is also a strong possibility that the summer will be hotter this year.”

Mr. Lekkas explained that experts cannot predict exactly what will happen this summer with 100% certainty. However, everything indicates that the continued increase in air temperature is causing enormous changes not only in the environment, but also affects socio-economic aspects.

“Rising temperatures in the summer season, as well as in other seasons, threaten drought. And this, in turn, implies the risk of fires. This is followed by soil corrosion, floods and landslides. This whole cycle continues to accelerate and leads to a negative change in the environment, a phenomenon that does not have a returnable character. There is a phenomenon of desertification,” he concluded.

For his part, professor of meteorology and climatology Prodromos Zanis noted that it is almost impossible to predict what kind of summer we will have: “There are only seasonal forecasts at the research level from major international organizations and the World Meteorological Organization. There are some estimates this summer that it is likely to be warmer, but we have to look at it with some caution.”

Prodromos Zanis, commenting on the unseasonably hot weather in Spain, said: “The truth is that if we look at the observational data, we will see that the frequency of such extreme events is increasing. Now and based on future scenarios, we are moving forward with further increases in temperatures.” He explained that in the summer in Greece there will be 5 to 6 episodes of extreme heat (ισχυρού καύσωνα).
