AlphaNews: Cyprus evicts 3,000 Ukrainian refugees from hotels

The Cypriot authorities plan to evict 3,000 Ukrainian refugees from hotels ahead of the summer season. This was reported by the local newspaper AlphaNews.

The Cypriot authorities have issued an ultimatum to 3,000 Ukrainian refugees, who are currently housed in 21 hotels in Cyprus, to seek refuge elsewhere by May 31, 2023. After all, this is what the political decision, adopted last February, stipulates that Ukrainian refugees arriving on the island from March 1, 2023 onwards, can stay in a hotel for a period of up to six months, according to the Cypriot publication.

After checking out of the hotels where they are staying, Ukrainian refugees can contact the Benefits Management Service of the Ministry of Social Security and apply for a rental subsidy.

According to AlphaNews, the relevant authorities are already implementing a plan to find work for able-bodied Ukrainian refugees. Moreover, the relevant state authorities have already informed Ukrainian refugees about their right to apply to job search centers and get a job. Moreover, at the initiative of the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, a meeting is planned with employers in the tourism sector in order to register interest in the employment of Ukrainian refugees.

As for the hotels that will continue to receive refugees from Ukraine after June 1, they will be determined during a tender announced by the Ministry of Tourism.

Last February, Cyprus recorded the highest proportion of Ukrainian refugees with temporary protection status, compared to the country’s population, in the European Union, according to data published by Eurostat, the statistical office EU. In particular, in Cyprus, a ratio of 1.1 Ukrainians with the status of temporary protection per 1,000 inhabitants was recorded, the second place in this indicator is occupied by the Czech Republic (0.9 per 1,000 inhabitants).
