Eurostat: the number of Ukrainians with temporary protection status has decreased in the EU

In 19 out of 26 EU member states, the number of Ukrainian citizens who were granted temporary protection status in February 2023 has decreased, the statistical office has reported. EU.

Germany leads in the number of temporary protection statuses issued to Ukrainians in February – 25,125, followed by Poland (24,905), the Czech Republic (9,775) and Romania (7,920), reports Eurostat.

Compared to January of this year, it was in these countries that a decrease was observed: 3540 less in Poland, 3080 in Germany, 2630 in the Czech Republic and 1035 in Romania.

Ireland and Finland, on the contrary, are leading in increasing the issuance of temporary protection statuses to Ukrainian citizens – by 540 and 520, respectively.

Currently, most Ukrainians with temporary protection live in Germany (1,000,530 people) and Poland (989,080). In relative terms, the largest number of Ukrainians with this status live in Cyprus (1.1 per 1,000 population) and the Czech Republic (0.9).

In March 2022, the European Union introduced the issuance of temporary protection permits for Ukrainian citizens who left as a result of a full-scale military invasion by Russia. This status means that Ukrainians who are fleeing the war do not need to apply for asylum in the EU. Earlier, the European Commission reported that it was ready to take the necessary measures to further extend the Directive on temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees, if necessary, until 2025.
