Visiting the Navagio bay in Zakynthos will be allowed with restrictions

Following a recent joint ministerial decision, the full forbidding access to the famous Navagio beach on the island of Zakynthos, the new decision will allow access, albeit with restrictions.

A strong earthquake that occurred on the morning of Thursday September 8 caused a rockfall in the bay of Navagio beach in Zakynthos. earthquake magnitude 5.4 on the Richter scale, which occurred in the sea area between Zakynthos and Kefaloniacaused a landslide. Large fragments of the rock broke off and fell into the sea, fortunately without causing any harm to passing boats.

According to the newspaper tanea.gr, a a new ministerial decision allowing access to the famous bay. Passenger boats will be able to approach Navagio Bay at a certain distance, which is estimated at about 40 meters from the coast. At the same time, those wishing to swim in the waters of the bay will be allowed, but also subject to the above distance, while walking along the coast will be prohibited.

Subject to the above exceptions, access to the wreck of the Panagiotis will be closed until 31 October 2023 due to landslides. The beach was closed on March 16 after a new assessment of the situation with alleged landslides.

These measures are taken by a joint decision of the ministers of civil protection, maritime and island policy, tourism and the climate crisis, which is based on the recommendation of Efthymios Lekkas, professor and president of the Organization for Antiseismic Planning and Protection (OASP), who indicated that if “any accident occurs, it will be catastrophe.”

The collapse caused several boats to capsize.

People on the beach were not seriously injured. Most of them, including two children, received help on the spot. Only a tourist from the Czech Republic, who had a back injury, had to be hospitalized.

Fearing that the situation would worsen, the Port Authority of Zakynthos has banned visitors from accessing the beach, as well as the area above the popular tourist site.
