"shipwreck beach" in Zakynthos will be closed this summer

The beach “Shipwreck” (Navagio), one of the most famous in Zakynthos, was decided to be closed until the end of October due to landslides.

The Official Gazette published a joint decision of the ministers of civil defense, maritime and island policy, tourism and the climate crisis, according to which access to the bay by sea and land is prohibited. Severe penalties are provided for those who ignore the ban.

ΟΑΣΠ President Prof. Efthymios Lekkas warns that an accident at this location could be catastrophic and talks about the risks that prompted such an unpopular decision that provoked a strong reaction. He argues that the danger is clear:

“We have landslides repeatedly. They are part of the natural processes that take place in the ‘Sunken Ship’ and the material from landslides feeds the most beautiful beach in almost all of Greece. It is mostly recycled by sea waves and gives these pebbles and water clarity. We made an attempt demarcate zones on the beach, which they did. It didn’t work because there were no guards there, and there were also new big landslides.”

The professor spoke about how the search for a solution that would suit everyone, quotes newsbeast.gr:

“We are in the process, so we are considering how Navagio will be used by businessmen and tourists. We are having a fruitful discussion both with the people of Zakynthos and with members of parliament, the governor of the region and the relevant ministries. I believe that a very good solution will be found for everyone, so that, on the one hand, there is no financial burden and impact on the people of Zakynthos, and on the other hand, the necessary security for tourists is provided.Because, you understand, if any incident occurs, it will be devastating for the entire region for a very long time time”.
