Russians want to go to Mars or at least Jupiter

Almost a quarter of Russian citizens (24%) expressed a desire to fly to Mars, as it turned out during a survey by the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center.

True so far – as space tourists. Another 10% dream of going to the Moon, 9% chose Venus, 6% the gas giant Jupiter, and 5% Saturn. In general, 70% of the Russian population agree to go to another planet in the solar system, writes RBC, referring to the results of the VTsIOM poll.

Compared to 2014, the number of those who believe in imminent contact with aliens has increased. Almost half, 45% of those surveyed, are confident that a manned spacecraft flight to Mars is possible in the next 50 years – in 2014 there were only 16%. The proportion of those who believe in the possibility of an early habitable base on the moon has also increased significantly – 37% compared with 13% nine years earlier. However, the share of those who believe that a war in outer space is possible increased the most (35% versus 7%).

In the development of other likely scenarios for space exploration, Russians prioritize mining on other planets (33%), tourist travel into space (22%), the appearance of space hotels in orbit (21%) and flight to the stars (18%).

But what about in a society without pessimists? Every tenth Russian believes in the destruction of mankind by a giant meteorite in the next 50 years. 7% admit that humanity will leave the Earth and move to another planet. And another 5% believe that the Earth may become uninhabitable due to the fact that the Sun goes out. A small number of respondents (3%) admit that aliens will take over the Earth.
