The Greeks became second poorest residents EU after Bulgaria, Eurostat recently said. The economic crisis is virtually unprecedented in modern times and is comparable only to the Great Depression in the United States in the 1930s.
This shocking reality is felt by most Greeks every day, despite the fact that the government every day assures that the country's economy is booming.
Today, the Financial Times took a closer look at this issue and came to this conclusion: “The Greek economy today is about 19 percent smaller than in 2007, while the EU economy as a whole grew by 17 percent.”.
Real wages in Greece have been steadily declining and are down 30 percent from pre-financial crisis levels, leaving the country with one of the lowest average salaries among developed economies in the world.
