Thessaloniki: restaurant owner threatens employees who demand wages

An employer in Thessaloniki who owes more than 2,000 euros to employees threatens them with violence.

Incident like writes newsbeast.gr, took place in one of the restaurants in Thessaloniki on April 1, a week ago. According to the complaint, the employer is accused of threatening former employees who demanded to pay them wage arrears. The owner of the establishment even grabbed by the throat a representative of the trade union, who came to the enterprise as a sign of support.

The restaurant is located in the eastern area of Thessaloniki. Three former employees – two girls and a boy – in the presence of members of the board of directors of the trade union of workers of tourism and catering enterprises (ΣΕΤΕΠΕ) demanded that the employer pay the amount due to them in the amount of almost 2,000 euros.

The employer reacted with unprecedented aggression, grabbing the neck of a member of the ΣΕΤΕΠΕ administration who was trying to stop him and dragging him into a corner. But the owner of the restaurant did not stop there, verbally threatening the former employees of the enterprise: “You will see what will happen, you will die, you will die” … Christina, a former employee and witness to the incident, referring to what she experienced on Saturday, says :

“We have come to claim our earnings owed to us by our employer (overtime, Christmas gifts). The employer approached us with extreme aggression, neither verbally nor physically compromised, raised his hand, grabbed a colleague by the neck and pressed him against the wall.

Last night, a protest rally by the city’s trade unions took place outside the store in solidarity with the people who filed the complaint. “We are here today to show that we are reacting en masse, we will not let anyone think that we will be intimidated,” said ΣΕΤΕΠΕ secretary Giannis Eleftheriadis.
