Car ban on the most beautiful beach in Greece

The municipal council of Kissamos has erected protective structures to prevent vehicles from entering the beach of incomparable beauty, admired by the whole world.

From now discontinued visiting by motorists one of the most beautiful beaches (not only in Greece, but throughout Europe), a place that annually attracts tens of thousands of visitors. This is Elafonisi, a small island off the southwestern tip of Crete, which is a protected nature reserve designated as a Landscape of Special Natural Beauty and a Natura area.

By decision of the Municipal Council of Kissamos, a barrier will be installed in the environmentally sensitive area to prevent the entry of cars. Now beach visitors will go down to the sea on foot (distance about 350 m). Along with this, free access will be organized to the beach, including for fire engines, private land owners and the disabled (moving on electric vehicles). Tour buses will also stop at a nearby parking lot.

According to haniotika-nea.gr, the decision to ban the entry of cars to Elafonisi was made by a majority vote of the municipal authorities and the councilor “Λαϊκής Συσπείρωσης”.

According to Mr. K. Koukourakis, environmental and spatial planning expert of the municipality of Kissamos, the municipality will hire 6 “environmental guides” who will know at least one foreign language. After passing the necessary training, they will inform the townspeople about the ecological significance of the protected area of the beach.

It is worth noting that, despite the fact that this is a Natura protected area, Elafonisi became a “victim” of the pilgrimage of uncultured citizens who managed to leave behind mountains of garbage.
