Electricity bills: €15 subsidy for April, new program coming

Energy and Environment Minister Kostas Skrekas announced new subsidies and tariffs for electricity consumption, which will come into force in April.

The minimum electricity charge for April falls below 9 cents per kilowatt-hour, based on next month’s subsidies, Environment and Energy Minister Kostas Skrekas announced today. The official also revealed that a new “Savings” (“Εξοικονομώ”) program will be announced next month.

Subsidy for electricity consumption for the population (with monthly consumption up to 500 kilowatt-hours) will be 1.5 cents per kilowatt-hour in April. Electricity rates announced earlier this week start at 10.4 cents and the minimum charge drops to 8.9 cents. This category of consumption (up to 500 kilowatt-hours) includes 90% of households. Subsidy for social tariff for households was set at 5.4 cents per kilowatt hour, and subsidy for farmers – in the amount of 1.5 cents.

The amount of subsidies in April, financed mainly by taxes on energy companies and auctions of carbon rights, reaches 24.4 million euros, while over the past 20 months, a total of more than 9 billion euros has been allocated.

“Electricity prices are on the way to a significant decline due to falling global natural gas prices. Many providers have announced prices for April approaching pre-crisis level. IN April consumers will see even lower bills compared to March“, – said the Minister of Environment and Energy. Mr. Skrekas stressed that the only solution for permanent price reduction on energy carriers is the transition to “green energy”, and announced the two new subsidized programswhich will be announced next month.

These are the new program “Εξοικονομώ 2023” with subsidies for energy saving in homes and the program “Εξοικονομώ – Ανακαινίζω” for young people, which is part of the state housing policy. As you know, in previous days, programs were announced to replace electric water heaters with solar ones (100 million euros) and install photovoltaics on the roof (200 million euros).
