By 2030, total energy consumption in EU should decrease by 11.7%. On Friday, such an agreement was reached between the European Parliament and the member states of the European Union.
How quotes LETA, European Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans said:
“Energy saving is an important step towards saving the planet. In recent months, Europeans have shown that they are ready and able to cope with this task, and our industry has proven that it is able to optimize energy use and production processes.”
An ambitious goal to reduce energy consumption will become mandatory for all EU countries, using data from 2020 as a starting point. To achieve the desired results, each EU state must further reduce energy consumption by an average of 1.49% per year between 2024 and 2030.
It is likely that some states will not be able to meet the challenge, even with the necessary efforts. In this case, the European Commission will be able to ask individual countries to increase energy savings.
The agreement must now be approved by the European Parliament and each EU state.
