The death of a 65-year-old man saved the lives of four patients

A 65-year-old man who was admitted to the intensive care unit of Papageorgiou Hospital (Thessaloniki) lost the battle for life. The relatives decided to take a humane step: to donate organs to needy recipients. Thus, the lives of 4 people were saved.

According to the announcement of the hospital management, “by his death, he gave life to four patients. His family, without wasting precious time and showing the greatness of the soul, decided to start donating the organs of a loved one.”

On Saturday 4/03, the process of obtaining organs deemed suitable for transplantation was completed. The surgical team of the Hippocrates Hospital in Thessaloniki removed the kidneys, while the transplant team of the Second Ophthalmological Clinic of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in the Papageorgiou Hospital removed the cornea of ​​the eye. Kidney transplantation was performed on Sunday March 5 in Hippocrates to two patients who had been on hemodialysis for several years, a 49-year-old and a 33-year-old. It is expected that the corneas will be transplanted to the recipients in the coming days.

The hospital administration expresses its heartfelt gratitude for organ donation and the greatness of the soul of the donor’s family. Thanks were also given to the staff of the Papageorgiou and Hippocrates hospitals, who conducted and successfully completed organ donation procedures under the coordination of the local coordinator of the National Organization for Transplantation.
