On May 6, the official coronation of the new ruler of Great Britain, King Charles, will take place at Westminster Abbey in London. He ordered that the music for the ceremony be Orthodox, Byzantine, and the maestro – Greek, as a tribute to his father Philip.
The Byzantine Singing Ensemble was chosen for the ceremony, and the conductor was Alexandros Ligas, professor of liturgy and Orthodox music at the St. Vladimir Theological Academy in New York and the founder of the Cappella Romana choir, who says:
“The king has maintained very close relations with Orthodoxy for several years now. He wanted to honor the memory of his father, Prince Philip, who was born in Corfu. Honor your father with a Greek hymn. There is a request from the King in Westminster Abbey that he wants Greek Orthodox music and they have contacted me as a researcher of Orthodox music. That is, we will find a way to satisfy this request.”
The official coronation ceremony for King Charles is scheduled for May 6, 2023 at Westminster Abbey in London, according to Buckingham Palace. writes CNN Greece.
