Finland is building a fence along the border with Russia

Finland has begun work on building a fence along the border with Russia, following a decision made after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The 200 km long fence is estimated to cost around 380 million euros and will be installed mainly on the southeastern border with Russia. The length of the border between the two countries is 1340 km.

According to a statement from the border service, the work began “with deforestation, which will continue to build a road and install a fence.” The fence will consist of metal barriers three meters high, covered with barbed wire, night vision cameras, lamps and loudspeakers in places considered sensitive. The final phase of the project is scheduled to be completed in 2026.

The decision was made as Helsinki fears that Russia will use the migrants to exert political pressure. For this reason, NATO candidate Finland amended its border guard law in July to make it easier to build stronger barriers. Also in September, after the announcement that Russian reservists would be drafted to fight in Ukraine, many Russians rushed to Finland. This forced the Finnish government to restrict the entry of Russian citizens into its territory by introducing various measures.

Until now, the borders of Finland have been guarded mainly by light wooden barriers, designed, in essence, to prevent the movement of animals.

Estonia, Latvia and Poland have also increased or are planning to increase the security of their borders with Russia.
