Belgium’s federal prosecutor’s office has said Francesco Giorgi, the partner of former European Parliament vice-speaker Eva Kaili, will be released from custody but will remain in custody with an electronic bracelet.
He is considered one of the key figures in the corruption scandal that shook the European Parliament. Giorgi was an aide to ex-MP Panzeri, who in 2019 founded the NGO Fighting Impunity. As the investigation showed, through this organization, Morocco, Qatar and other Arab countries could influence the decisions of European legislators for bribes. Georgie was present at the meetings during the transfer of money and gifts, and, at a minimum, acted as an interpreter.
Pierre Antonio Panzeri made a deal with Belgian law enforcement, promising to give details and name accomplices, but, like Eva Kylie, is still in custody. The Greek woman will remain in detention for another two months, according to the decision of the Brussels court on February 16.
Niccolo Figa-Talamanca is another Italian involved in the scandal. He heads the public organization “No Peace Without Justice”, through which, presumably, money was transferred for bribery. Earlier, a Belgian court ruled that Figa Talamanca could not be released, even if wearing an electronic bracelet.
Last year, at the beginning of the investigation, the police carried out about 20 searches of suspects and seized a total of one and a half million euros.
