Powerful earthquake in Turkey measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale (video)

The strongest tremors shook Turkey this morning. In the province of Kahramanmaras in southeastern Turkey, an earthquake of magnitude 7.4 hit early in the morning on February 6. More than 75 people died. Turkish seismologists note that the earthquake could become one of the most destructive in the country in recent times.

In the vicinity of Gaziantep, the magnitude of the tremors was 7.5 on the Richter scale. The hearth lay at a depth of 10 kilometers. An earthquake of magnitude 7.4 occurred in Turkey’s Kahramanmarash, the epicenter was in the Pazarchik region at a depth of 7 kilometers.

  1. The earthquake occurred in the Pazardzhik region in the province of Kahramanmarash at a depth of 7 km at 04:17 local time.
  2. Later, three more earthquakes with a magnitude of 6.4 to 6.6 occurred in the province of Gaziantep. There were also 22 aftershocks.
  3. The earthquake was felt in 10 provinces, including Kahramanmarash, Gaziantep, Hatay, Osmaniye, Adiyaman, Malatya, Diyarbakir.
  4. A few hours after the first earthquake, the Republic’s Department of Emergency Situations announced that the magnitude of aftershocks in Turkey began to decrease to 3.9-4.1.

According to the latest data, the agency reports, there are numerous casualties and destruction:

  • in southeastern Turkey, at least 76 people were killed, more than 500 were injured;
  • in the province of Malatya, at least 23 people were killed;
  • at least five people were killed in the province of Osmaniye;
  • it was initially reported that at least 10 people had died in Şanlıurfa province. Then their number grew to 15;
  • destruction was recorded in Adana, Gaziantep, Diyarbakir, Kahramanmarash, Malatya, Sanliurfa. More than 100 residential buildings collapsed, including high-rise buildings;
  • According to the newspaper Yeni Şafak, the earthquake collapsed a historic fortress in the province of Gaziantep, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said that in the south-east of the country they began to eliminate the consequences of the earthquake: “I hope that we will all survive this catastrophe together as soon as possible and with the least damage.”
