A major rescue operation is underway 18 nautical miles south of Palaiochora Chania, with up to 500 migrants reportedly on board a fishing boat.
A tanker, two bulk carriers, two Italian fishing vessels, a Coast Guard patrol boat and a Navy frigate are already on site. A call for assistance came after midnight to the European number 112, the message said that there were five hundred people on the ship.
According to the Athens News Agency, a strong wind is blowing at the site of the rescue operation – up to 7 points on the Beaufort scale.
