Attiki Odos: when 2000 euros will be paid

Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Kostas Karamanlis demanded an immediate payment of compensation in the amount of 2,000 euros from representatives of Attiki Odos during their meeting today.

The purpose of the emergency meeting that the political leadership of the Ministry of Infrastructure held with representatives of Attiki Odos was to pay the amount of 2,000 euros for a car “trapped” on the highway, as demanded by Prime Minister Mr Mitsotakis. The corresponding message emphasizes that the ministry demanded the immediate payment of the amount to those who are entitled to it.

The company confirmed its obligation to pay the amount, while agreeing to submit a plan to the ministry in the coming days regarding the method of payment for the damage caused to citizens. In addition, it was notified of the creation of a commission under law 4663/2020 (to investigate the emergency situation that arose at Attiki Odos). All necessary documents must be submitted by Attiki Odos in order for the report to be submitted within 20 days.

The CEO of Attica Odos, where thousands of people were trapped in their cars on Monday night due to a snow storm, reportedly resigned on Tuesday. Vassilios Halkias offered his resignation after the fiasco, and Attikes Diadromes SA, the parent company of Attiki Odos SA, accepted it.

Recall, as “Russian Athens” wrote earlier, Greek rescue services evacuated 1,800 vehicles and 3,500 people in them trapped in the snow on the main highway of the country of Attica Odos, leading to the international airport.

On Tuesday, January 25, Greek government spokesman Yiannis Ikonomou reported the incident:

“It was a very difficult night, and superhuman efforts are being made to free the Attiki Odos from cars. The police, army, fire brigade, civil protection acted all night and were able to evacuate about 1.8 thousand cars from it. Another 1.2 “Thousand cars are still there. During the night, 3,000-3,500 people were transported. Rescuers distributed blankets, water and food to people. There were commuter trains that constantly picked people up from highway exits to take them to the airport.” Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Christos Stylianides apologized to citizens, noting among other things: “The biggest problem was observed in Attiki Odos. Despite the great efforts of the rescue service (in Greece, this is the responsibility of the fire department) and the traffic police, the Attiki Odos company was unable to ensure normal traffic on the road. In the meetings that preceded the previous days, they declared that they were fully prepared for the upcoming weather disasters in order to keep the road open. The responsibility for the situation should be placed on the Attiki Odos, I will suggest this to the Prime Minister.”
