Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias: “There will be no border closures and entry restrictions”

The Greek Minister of Tourism Vassilis Kikilias spoke about the features of the upcoming tourist season 2022.

As the minister told the publication russia.greekreporter, Greece plans in the upcoming 2022 season to “win back” its position in the tourism market. An important factor for this is open borders, said Mr. Kikilias:

“There will be no border closures or entry restrictions. This year we do not plan to close at all – with the developed protocols and digital passports.

The Minister noted that the authorities hope to open the tourist season in March. During this period, a full-fledged opening of restaurants, hotels, bars, beaches will begin. Greece is planning a long tourist season this year, not limited to the summer months.

The minister’s intentions and expectations are supported by the European market. During the pandemic, Greece has outperformed other destinations for a tour operator, with 1.5 million travelers choosing a summer holiday in Greece out of a total of 5.4 million tourists, says Fritz Hussen, chief executive of the German TUI Group. Mr. Yussen believes that in 2022 the number of tourists can exceed the “pre-pandemic” level:

“Before the crisis, we had 2.8 million tourists. And we expect to exceed pre-crisis levels in 2022 of three million customers traveling to Greece.”
