Expert: Delta survivor has no immunity from Omicron

Athanasios Exadaktylos, President of the Panhellenic Medical Association, spoke about studies that show that a person who has had the Delta strain is not immune to the Omicron strain.

Scientists from the National Institute of Infectious Diseases in South Africa and researchers from the University of Pretoria have uncovered data on deaths from infection with the Omicron strain.

Speaking on SKAI 100.3, Exadaktylos explained that “a person who has suffered from the Delta strain is not immune to the Omicron strain.” However, he stressed, those vaccinated with three doses should feel safe *.

“Omicron is a phenomenon that will evolve rapidly with high peaks. We need to remain calm, despite the fact that the numbers shock us, ”he said.

He said that “the new mutation will peak in January because the healthcare system is already burdened with the Delta strain.”

The president of the Panhellenic Medical Association added that it should be taken for granted that “the more infections there are, the more hospitalizations there will be.” In this context, he urged those who have not been vaccinated and are over 50 to hurry up and get vaccinated, “because these are the ones who will meet with Omicron and go to the hospital.”

“You cannot convey the message that Omicron is just a cold. A large part of the population may have a common cold, but for a certain number it will obviously cause complications, and we will have problems,” – for his part, the professor of microbiology Alcibiades Vatopoulos warned.

South African scientists believe Omicron is not as dangerous as Delta

Scientists from the National Institute of Infectious Diseases in South Africa and researchers from the University of Pretoria have uncovered data on deaths from infection with the Omicron strain.

With reference to scientific research data The telegraph reports that the mortality rate from the Omicron strain is 75% less than when infected with the previous strains.

The study analyzed data from patients hospitalized in the city of Tswane (Gauteng province), where it was first recorded Flash Omicron… Due to complications associated with it, 4.5% of patients died, compared with 21.3% of patients who died from previous variants of the coronavirus.

Another encouraging fact was established: less than 50% of hospitalized patients required oxygen therapy, compared with 99.5% for diseases with other strains. Intensive therapy was needed only for 1% of those infected with omicron, while in it needed 4.3% of patients with alpha and delta variants.

The period of hospitalization was also reduced – patients stayed in hospitals for an average of 4 days, and in previous waves of the disease this required at least almost 9 days. The publication cites the findings of scientists:

“In the city of Zwane, Omicron’s first global epicenter, the severity of illness, the number of deaths and the length of hospital stay have decreased.”

In Greece, the situation has not changed significantly so far, but it is already noticeable that, despite the manifold increase in the number of infected, the number of intubated and dead is at the level before the appearance of the strain. And the statement about quarantine for a period of 5 days confirms this version.

PS The theory that with each mutation the coronavirus weakens is confirmed. Let’s hope for these predictions, which assure us that in 2-3 years from the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, SARS-CoV-2 will turn into a regular seasonal flu.

* So three or four already? Considering that studies indicate the low effectiveness of the created vaccines for Covid-19 SARS ‑ CoV ‑ 2 against the Omicron mutation and a significant drop in the number of antibodies, starting from 10 weeks.
