The leaders of the Civil Aviation Authority (Υπηρεσίας Πολιτικής Αεροπορίας, ΥΠΑ) are very pleased with the tourism season this year, having received the latest statistics. According to them, passenger traffic in August 2021 increased by 77.7%, while arrivals from abroad recorded an increase of 82.6% compared to the corresponding month of 2020.
This suggests that an important sector of the Greek economy has performed excellently this year, much better than even expected. In particular, the total number of passengers (arrivals / departures) in August this year reached 8,063,277, which is 77.7% more than in August 2020 (4,536,489).
However, comparing aviation statistics for August 2021 with those for August 2019 takes into account real-world circumstances such as the Covid-19 pandemic and flight restrictions.
Thus, the arrival of foreign passengers this year shows a decrease of 23.5% (compared to August 2019), 3,977,915 foreign passengers. Also, the total passenger traffic at Greek airports fell by 21.2% compared to August 2019, 10,238,414 passengers.
Since the beginning of this year, more than 20,000,000 passengers have visited our country, which is 53.7% more than in the corresponding period of 2020, when only 13,500,000 people were served.
Senior finance executives say there is a strong focus on average travel spending, which is higher this year than 2019.
