Greece: skyrocketing fuel and food prices

Supermarket shelf prices and fuel prices have skyrocketed during the pandemic, and staple foods will become even more expensive in the near future.

It is expected that in the near future prices will continue to grow – due to the growth not only of raw materials on the international market, but also of the prices for transport services. According to the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EVEA), the rise in prices for raw materials, cereals, dairy products, sugar, coffee and beef starts from 3.63% and reaches 26.59%.

The OPEN TV report lists some of the price increases in supermarkets:

Stationery: 4% -12%. Flour: 10%. Vegetable oil: 50%.

At the same time, prices for consumer goods in supermarkets have already increased and are:

Rice: from € 1.70 to € 1.90. Coffee: from 5.40 euros to 5.70 euros. Baby food: from 10.70 euros to 10.80 euros.

“The increase in tariffs for container shipments from Asia to Europe in six months amounted to 525%,” – said President of EVEA Konstantinos Michalos.

The CEO of IELKA confirmed to OPEN that “the pressure on raw material prices is growing and it remains to be seen whether this will affect the value of goods on supermarket shelves in the future.”

Fuel prices are rising too

In addition to rising food prices in supermarkets, consumer budgets are being pressured by rising fuel prices, which in turn are affecting food prices.

In particular, the average price for:

Unleaded petrol A 95 is now 1.61 euros per liter. Last year at this time the price was 1.36 euros per liter. Diesel – 1.11 euros per liter a year ago, now 1.33 euros / liter.
