Intubate or give "die peacefully"

After the death of a 57-year-old woman who denied the coronavirus vaccine, another patient was admitted to Evangelismos Hospital who refused to be intubated, said Matina Pagoni, president of the Doctors’ Association of Athens-Piraeus Hospital.

Speaking on SKAI this morning, she said: “Often patients and relatives do not allow doctors to intubate them. From now on, such cases will be heard more and more, since now the so-called anti-vaccines come to us, who deny everything.

This was the case at the Evangelismos clinic. The patient and relatives did not allow intubation. In this case, the doctors notify the prosecutor, and he orders to prescribe everything that the doctors recommend (namely, intubation). Thus, doctors will also be insured, so as not to get additional problems “on their heads.”

It is known that there are criteria for intubation for each patient, and that only the attending physician (sometimes with colleagues) decides on the implementation of a particular medical procedure.

For his part, the director of the intensive care unit of the Papanikolaou hospital, Nikos Karavelos, explained that of the coronavirus patients who are admitted to hospitals, some are doing well, while others may develop severe pneumonia and require oxygen. “We have protocols for treating pneumonia. A patient in a difficult situation must be intubated to ensure oxygenation and protect all organs, ”he stressed.

In connection with the increasing complaints that patients refuse to intubate, it was noted that in this case, the doctor first tries to convince relatives that there is hope for recovery and appropriate treatment. If they persist and condemn the patient “to death” themselves, the doctor must notify the prosecutor in order to receive an order to continue treatment.
