Tokyo Olympics will be held without spectators due to Covid

Japanese Olympic Minister Tamayo Marukawa said earlier in July that the organizers of the Tokyo Olympics agreed to hold the event without spectators, amid a state of emergency related to the Covid-19 coronavirus. It has already been decided that the Games will not welcome international fans.

“Given the impact of the coronavirus variants and the need to prevent infections from re-spreading to the rest of the country, we need to strengthen our countermeasures,” said Suga. “Given the situation, we will impose a state of emergency for Tokyo.”

The state of emergency will end after the events of 23 July-8 August. Medical experts in Japan welcomed the decision to host the Tokyo Olympics without spectators, in line with coronavirus restrictions, but warned that the ban would not completely eliminate risk re-growth in the number of cases of Covid-19.
